The road.
It starts at Lukla, an airstrip carved into a mountainside with a runway that simply ends. From there the trail climbs through Namche Bazaar, a market town stacked in a natural amphitheater, past the monastery at Tengboche, up to Gorak Shep and the camp itself, pitched higher above the sea than almost anywhere people sleep.
